Northern Technical Institute (NTI) was established in January 2017 in the Jaffna YMCA.
It is actually a brain child of Eng. Gobinath. Amarasingam who became the Chairperson of it later.
The classes started on 1st July 2017.
NTI operates at the main Centre in Navaly now and on Regional concept in several NTI branch Centres. Branch Centres are there in remote villages
i,e. Paandaveddai, Periyaplore, Tholpuram Moolai in the Chulipuram area and Navaly.
NTI collaborated with the Village Development Societies which have buildings with all facilities.
These are offered free of charge and help in the logistic arrangements. Branch Centres at Kaitady, Nunavil and Urumpirai are to be activated after the covid 19 pandemic.
Northern Technical Institute (NTI) is a registered company which aims to further educate and train the youth and give them necessary skills, knowledge and expertise, so that they will become employable and/or self-employed and be productive citizens of Sri Lanka
There is a big demand for professional English and ICT literacy in Jaffna and nation at large. Local employers prefer candidates with entry level ICT qualification or similar educational training for entry and mid level jobs.
The Government has one Technical College at Kokuvil Jaffna, which receives an average of 400 applications for each course but admit only 25 to 30 students per course.
Most of the private ICT educational Institutions provide popular foreign based courses that will lead to higher education abroad. Rest of institutions that offered the courses do not provide on the job training.
NTI fee was very moderate and also gave scholarships up to 100%.
NTI directors took classes free of charge and the staff were given a reasonable allowance.
NTI directors maintained close contact with the students and continue to evaluate the operation and student’s performance. As a result of the dialogue we found out the difficulty of meeting the transport fare.
NTI provided subsidy and total bus fare. But when we visited their remote villages we found community societies with building provided by NGOS.
Our partnership with the respective societies enabled us to use their building free of charge. Thus the regional centers become operational in their villages and helped to reduce the burden of transport expenses.
We are pleased to inform our donors and well-wishers that NTI has expanded its services to the outer towns in Jaffna
Classes began first at the Regional Center in Tholpuram ( a suburb of Vaddukoddai), Then began at Moolai, Navaly, Nunavil Kaithady, Urumpirai, Paandveddail.
In November 2019 we were able to open the 9th Regional centre in Periya Plore, Chulipuram.
NTI is reaching out to a segment that does not have the financial resources or guidance and support system to pursue their educational or vocational path.
Our aim is to provide guidance, build confidence and equip them with the necessary skills to meet the demand of the job market or embark on their further educational pursuit.
Hence NTI gives up to 100% scholarship
Ninety percent (90%) of our students (excluding the Jaffna university graduates) are either working or pursuing further education since the conclusion of our course. Entrepreneurship promotional activities are carried out in five villages and technical support is provided to many other villages.
Two girls from Pandaveddai are following the govt recognized Private Nursing certificate course at Green Memorial Hospital Manipay.
Financial support was given by Ms.Angela Paul of the USA who continue to mentor them.

Thanks to ISLF-USA and
Come share Foundation, Colombo
for providing the initial capital to commence the NTI at the Jaffna YMCA premises on rent.
Again Mr.Amarasingam was fortunate to obtain a donation of 15 personal computers from his USA university mate who runs a big business in India.
Although we planned for a high level technical institution, considering the capital required and mandatory requirements of the VTA we amended our plan in order to grow step by step with our first hand information

NTI was formed with the intention of educating, guiding and coaching the youths to pursue the next step in their vocational and/or career paths. NTI made useful contributions towards this goal. Our previous newsletters have details about the same.
However, considering the effects of the pandemic on the rural population and the economic condition of the people, it was decided that uplifting the economic condition of rural population and empowering them was very essential.
As a result, NTI developed a program called, “Sustainable Upliftment and Rural Empowerment” (SURE) Under this program 850 families have benefited so far. Our engagement with those communities is in the fields of; Poultry keeping, Home gardening, and Murunga cultivation. Also NTI is providing consultancy services and needed capital for entrepreneurs in the rural villages. We are guiding and supporting students who are pursuing secondary vocational qualification in the fields of nursing, caregiver, ICT and sewing.
The SURE program is making a measurable impact in 20 branches of the NTI. Beneficiaries are motivated to increase the bird population and thereby earn an extra income. Similarly Home garden project beneficiaries are also getting the benefit of the home gown vegetables.
